Hey Mister

  1995

6am on Friday morning, a day like any other day

The city starts to breath and bustle, while everyone is on their way, to work

When he steps on the bus, it’s crowded, just like everyday

But there she is sitting on the back bench, and she makes a little space

He’s caught up in her beauty, like he’s done a thousand days before

Finally gathers up enough nerve to speak, the bus jerks and he falls onto the floor

His face is red but she just giggles, and reaches out her hand

His stomach turns, tongue-tied and twisted, it’s all he can do to stand

So she smiles and softly says

Hey Mister, are you married? Do you want to be?

Hey Mister, think you could love someone like me through eternity?

They met that night at a corner café, for conversation and a beer

Three days later they stand in a small town chapel, been married now for 57 years

So I ask her, “Grandma, are you crazy? Did you lose your mind?”

She just smiles at me and says, “True love doesn’t measure time”.

When you find that someone special, let them know what you feel inside

Take ‘em by the hand and show your feelings, and hang on for the roller coaster ride

Because life’s too short, and love’s too precious, to let a good thing pass you by

Hey Mister, are you married? Do you want to be?

Hey Mister, think you could, love someone like me through eternity?

Oh, hey Mister, are you married?

Rhea and Dewitt Carlock ... they had a wonderful story about how they met. They are my grandparents whom I was very close to. I called them Dee Dee and Papa Daddy. I often refer to them as my parents as I spent a lot of time with them. Papa Daddy loved to tell stories and this was one I heard often. They met riding a bus to work in Dallas. They married soon after meeting. I used to sleep in Dee Dee's bed with her sometimes and this was one of the stories she would tell me. It was always a favorite. Papa Daddy had a little bit of a different take on it. They have both passed away now and I hope they are loving one another through eternity just like they promised one another.
