Four Feet

  2010

Who’s to say love at first sight does not exist

I used to not believe it, felt foolish to conceive it

But the more I learned about him, the more I wanted him around

Found myself wanting to believe

Patiently waiting, yeah, like I’ve ever been patient

His recovery was long, but each day a little stronger

Doubting my ability to care for someone other than myself

But in that first moment, it’s then I knew

Three steps at a time (He could only take)

Just three steps at a time

He ran, he ran so far and fast, so unafraid

Never once looked back to see my heart breaking

Ironically proud to watch him run

Like he had four feet beneath him

He ran like he had four feet beneath him

Most nights I think about him, hope to God he’s safe and warm

Wish for a second chance to see that brown-eyed glance

The bitter sting of responsibility and how I must have let him down

Perhaps I was his biggest mistake after all

Three steps at a time (he could only take)

Just three steps at a time

He ran, he ran so far and fast, so unafraid

Never once looked back to see my heart breaking

Ironically proud to watch him run

Like he had four feet beneath him

He ran like he had four feet beneath him

He ran like he had four feet beneath him

Three steps at a time, He could only take

He ran like he had four feet beneath him

Just three steps at a time

He could only take

Just three steps

This song is dedicated to Jax, my first Italian Greyhound who was rescued from a puppy mill and lost a leg in the process. He was still shy of people but slowly learning to trust. When his leash broke, and he ran, he took a piece of my heart with him. I hope whoever found him has given him patience, love, and compassion. Thank you for letting me love you Jax, even if only for a little while.
